Every year since 1995, DISC has partnered with the City of Boca Raton to create a
memorable Martin Luther King. Jr. Celebration on the third Monday in January.
The daylong event begins with a free community breakfast at Ebenezer Missionary
Baptist Church in Pearl City, adjacent to the Martin Luther King monument on
Glades Road just west of Federal Highway. After breakfast, Dr. King’s “I Have a
Dream Speech” is played, followed by a march led by the Boca Raton Community
High School Marching Band. A ceremony follows, led by members of DISC, with
participation from local political leaders, clergy, and citizens. Traditionally, the
Mayor of Boca Raton offers a statement in honor of the occasion. The ceremony
includes a keynote address and the presentation of DISC’s annual Humanitarian
Award, followed by an afternoon of entertainment, including jazz and gospel
music, dance performances by local youth, free face painting and carnival rides.
Lunch is available from a variety of vendors. In 2020, the ceremony and
performances were held at the Mizner Park Amphitheatre (East Lot), with a crowd
of more than 700 attendees..
